sumo!

We spent the afternoon at the sumo tournament. Very exciting. Will have to post more about this when we return from Kyoto (weekend trip -- girls only!) but 'til then, here are some quick pics..

The wrestlers face each other before the bout begins. (Click on the pic to view it in fullscreen, then click the back button to read on.)
Fists touch the ground; bodies lock, muscle ripples, fat jiggles. There's pushing, punching, slapping, grabbing, and sometimes, hoisting by the mawashi (thick belt). First one to hit the dirt or be forced out of the ring loses. It's all over in a few (intense!) seconds.
