black sesame ice cream with a side of seaweed

On Sunday we stopped by a pretty little ice cream shop in our neighborhood, Ouca Japanese Ice. There were bud vases and tidy plants on the spotless counters, the oolong tea was complimentary and the stainless steel tubs in the glass case reminded me of Cones in Greenwich Village and other gelaterias. We ordered combo cups, and ended up sampling five different flavors in all: green tea (a bit strong), black sesame (interesting and pretty good), sweet potato (nice), coffee (no surprises there) and milk (plain, not even vanilla added). The kids rejected four out of the five. That's right, milk was the big winner. I give them credit for giving the others a try though.

When the scooper/cashier handed us a cup, he also gave us a pinch of nori, tiny black morsels of dried seaweed covered in salt, on a cocktail napkin (the Japanese equivalent of sprinkles? an apres-dessert palate cleanser? must investigate). It seemed too odd to pass up, so T and I both gave it a try and were surprised to find that we liked the little bits.
